STRATEGY & TIPSGrant Tip of the Week 💡-Apply AnywayDrew Tucker (@itsnotaxylophone), percussionist & Director of Music Programs and Partnerships at South Arts , read our minds and reiterated one of Bustling Spaces’ core beliefs about Grant Writing: it’s never just about “the grant.” When we think it is, if we don’t receive it, we’re at risk of internalizing failure and conjuring inaccurate stories about why we didn’t get it based on assumptions and limited information. Most times, these thought patterns don’t get us any grants either, nor do they move us further forward in our creative journey. But when we know better, we can release that and open ourselves up to opportunities far beyond the thing that we’re applying for. You can read the full post here, but we’re quoting his points below so that you can bookmark them for future use.
“The Real Reason to Apply for A Grant (It’s Not The Money) - The Odds Aren’t The Point If there’s 130 people and only 11 to 15 people per cycle are going to get it - why should I try? The odds are not in my favor. But I’m hopefully going to help you appreciate why there’s so much value in really just applying. 1) Grants Get You In Front of People Who Hire People There are people here right now who did not win an award but are connected, who have received some benefits by being part of the Jazz Road or South Arts ecosystem - because we saw their application and it was great. 2) Not Getting Awarded Every Grant You Apply To Isn’t a Judgment of Your Worth When you do not get a grant, it is not because you’re not good enough. And a lot of times when we keep on applying and we keep on failing, we think that. And we internalize it. And we shouldn’t do that. 3) Going Through the Application Process Makes Your Career Stronger - Period By asking these questions and having to apply, you’re learning whether it’s feasible or not. There’s a lot of things I thought were possible - but as soon as I go down the rabbit hole, it’s like ‘oh, right "

The Illinois General Assembly is finalizing the FY27 state budget this week, and lawmakers need to hear from constituents now. Arts Alliance Illinois is urging legislators to support a $5 million increase to the Illinois Arts Council (IAC) above the Governor’s proposed budget, helping restore state arts funding to 2007 levels and continue Illinois’ economic recovery. We need advocates across Illinois to contact their legislators today and ask them to support a $30.9 million appropriation for the Illinois Arts Council in the final FY27 budget agreement.
