Today’s feature: New large-scale Data Initiative on the Creative Economy from Arts Alliance Illinois THE NUMBERS ARE IN! Congratulations to our friends at Arts Alliance Illinois on the launch of their new Initiative “The Creative Economy of Chicago and Illinois: Impact and Assets.” Like many creative workers and leaders in the arts ecosystem, at Bustling Spaces we’ve long recognized that the creative economy has an outsized impact on the city’s economy, and we’ve believed that the data, when compiled, would bear that out. Arts Alliance Illinois undertook the painstaking task of aggregating and analyzing that data, proving that the arts is not only a vital part of the state and city economy, but is one of the top economic drivers in Chicago and the third largest employing industry, generating nearly 50 billion dollars in total output and 5.7 billiion dollars in tax revenue. At the state level, it’s the 6th largest industry, generating $148.1 billion in total output and $20.6 billion in tax revenue. As the year continues, there will be additional regional analyses and new resources added to this initiative, diving deeper into what local impacts look like for your community.

This is the kind of data that can’t be ignored as we continue to advocate for policy changes that value and protect creative workers, organizations and communities throughout Chicago, especially those that have been systemically ignored, making the case for deeper investment in the Arts & Culture ecosystem. It’s now clear, in black-and-white, that the Arts & Culture has played and continues to play an essential role in making Chicago the incomparably vibrant city that it is today - supporting the arts citywide has always been a wise investment and the right thing to do. We recommend that anyone who plays a part in this ecosystem visit the new Arts Alliance Illinois Creative Economy page and read the full reports to get a fuller understanding of the implications and their uses, and hear more from Arts Alliance’s Executive Director Claire Rice about the importance of the data in WBEZ’ s recent feature on the initiative. Grant writing isn’t a straight line with a dot at the end - it’s a river |

STRATEGY & TIPSGrant Tip of the Week 💡-Write Beyond the GrantIn our last issue, we featured some takeaways from an Instagram post by Drew Tucker (@itsnotaxylophone), percussionist & Director of Music Programs and Partnerships at South Arts , explaining why applying for a grant where the odds may not be in your favor can still be a good idea. In today’s issue, we’ll give you some other reasons why you should think of applying for funding as more of a river than a line with a delineated stop at the end, and how each opportunity can lead to another - whether or not you “get the grant.” 1) There are people behind the funding process - and people remember I’ve always told folks - write your proposal such that your mission, vision, and work are so clear that panelists, readers, etc. are compelled to remember you. We have not fully descended into a dystopian realm where bots are reading all submissions and sorting decisions like you’ve heard about with certain job application processes - in this arena, you’ve still got humans reading and making decisions. The impression you make can & will extend LONG AFTER you submit the application. People remember, people can be moved by your work, and people talk. We’ve written grants for people who were rejected from the opportunity that they applied for, only to find out later that the initial funder found more funds for their project because the idea just wouldn’t let them go. We’ve written grants for clients where there was only supposed to be one “winner,” and the funder changed their mind and selected an additional awardee because again - something wouldn’t let them go. Those funders then went on to advocate for *both* ideas to get more funding from other sources than either would have on their own.
There are more possibilities than the ones listed in the grant guidelines or RFP. Write the truth about the work you love, and they’ll find you. 2) The application you’re working on is just the rough draft of the next one “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” isn’t just to help the environment - it helps your process as you’re applying for grants with multiple due dates and a variety of odds. Reduce your time when you reuse past proposals, and recycle relevant language / assets. This isn’t just efficiency - the application that’s rejected by one funder could be accepted by another. We’ve literally written grants that were rejected one month, only to turn around, tweak language and get an award for 2 - 3x the amount from a different funder that the client applied to the next month. It could be because the idea was more aligned with that funder’s priorities. That said…it could be that they improved some sections after review, and the proposal got better. This leads to #3….. 3) Writing Grants is Practice - You get better at thinking through and articulating your work Writing grants can be a repetitive, headache - inducing, thankless task - OR- It can be a chance to see your work through another lens, to refine your pitch, and to improve the way you speak about your work. If it still feels like drudgery, have you considered… Having a trusted “hype person” tell you what they value about the work you’re trying to fund? Talking out your ideas into voice notes and listening back to them to get a sense of how they sound to a panelist or potential funder in another setting (or having someone else listen to them)?
